From the introduction...
Shared site programs are those where youth and elders receive ongoing services concurrently in a single site. Whereas we began our editorial journey with a focus on some of the more common models, such as child care centers co-located with nursing homes or adult day services facilities, our definition of shared site intergenerational programs was challenged with this special issue. We found that our definition did not necessarily apply across all countries and cultures. Rather, the authors challenged us to expand our view to include shared spaces in outdoor settings, work environments, and individuals' homes.

In addition to research, this special issue of JIR includes eight program profiles that capture a wealth of innovation with regard to building intergenerational relationships and creating pathways for civic engagement and a shared sense of community. From Hawaii to Virginia, we share stories of shared site programs that have evolved to harness rich community resources to meet human needs, even in times of significant economic challenge.
