Taylor & Francis launch a new White Paper on facilitating discovery of free-to-view online content

The increasing amount of free-to-view online content poses a significant challenge for today’s librarian in facilitating discovery.

Potentially such free resources could be of great value for education purposes - teaching, learning and research - but how do librarians determine the value of all these online resources when ‘free’ doesn’t necessarily mean easy to find?

Taylor & Francis recently conducted research via focus groups, telephone interviews and a survey (eliciting over 500 responses) to explore librarians' opinions on the availability and usefulness of free online resources – the results of which are now being released in the form of a White Paper.

You Know I’m No Good: the Guardian and the Independent’s gendered reporting on Amy Winehouse and Pete Doherty

‘We like our rock stars to be hard drinking, chain smoking, authority-baiting rebels. That is, unless they’re women.
Two Dutch academics from Erasmus University Rotterdam, Pauwke Berkers and Merel Eeckelaer, set out to see whether female artists were treated differently by the media than their male counterparts. They chose Amy Winehouse and Pete Doherty, two artists of a similar age and with similarly infamous lifestyles as their subjects and two British broadsheets, the Guardian and the Independent, as their research base.’

From ‘rivers of blood’ to rants on the Croydon tram: race, politics and citizenship in Britain

Race relations in Britain have come a long way. Or have they? A recent article by Paul Gilroy, Professor of American and English Literature at King’s College London, examines class, race, citizenship and multiculturalism in modern Britain. He argues that the ways we deal with and understand these concepts are out-dated, and that new approaches are desperately needed.

The greatest place to be a Martian: Australia?

Would Martians feel at home in Australia? Recent research has proven that if Martians took a holiday to Australia they might feel more at home than you'd think. Associate Professor Patrice F. Rey (University of Sydney) has recently exposed a unique set of attributes suggesting that the Australian red centre could be a close analogue for the surface of the red planet – and how this unusual weathering has led to the formation of Australia's opals.

Experts debate the meaning and inevitability of cyber warfare

In 2012 the Journal of Strategic Studies published several ground-breaking articles on the emerging threat of cyber warfare. These articles, and indeed the concept of cyber warfare per se, proved controversial. Twelve months on, the current issue of the Journal of Strategic Studies presents a "cyber roundtable" where experts respond to criticisms and further expand the debate to develop a clearer definition of "cyber warfare" and to explore whether or not it is a significant threat.

The US shale-gas revolution and European renewables: divergence and cooperation in alternative energy

That the United States and Europe have been following different energy policies over the past few decades won’t come as a surprise. However, according to one researcher, their divergence – with the US leading ‘the shale gas revolution’ and Europe investing heavily in modern renewables – is a good thing for the development of both alternative-energy sources.

Is the public trust in government in terminal decline?

Trust in government is perceived to be crucial to democracy, but there is growing anxiety in some countries – principally the UK and the United States – that public trust is declining dramatically. Should citizens be worried? Would more referendums enhance public trust? And what are the implications for politicians and researchers? Leading academics from the US and Europe debate the “trust gap” in the current issue of the Journal of Trust Research.

Binge drinking Britain: Will setting a minimum price per unit help change Britain’s drinking habits?

New research has questioned whether the government’s plan to set a minimum price per unit on alcohol will actually help curb binge drinking.
The article by Tom Henri seeks to evaluate the implications of the legislation, particularly from the perspectives of class and national identity. It also takes into consideration how the government has failed to fully consider the lessons of history when considering new drinking laws. Coupling this with the £850 million the alcohol industry stands to make make per year from the bill, and an increase in the illegal smuggling of booze, shows how the situation is a potential powder keg for the government.

Protecting hospitals from ‘new’ terrorist threats

Most academic studies of terrorism threats concentrate on how health care services plan for and respond to mass-casualty terrorism attacks that may occur elsewhere in a city. However, writing in the latest issue of the journal Public Management Review, researchers Denis Fischbacher-Smith and Moira Fischbacher-Smith warn that health care managers, hospital designers and urban planners, as well as regulating authorities and national government, need to reassess their “Western-centric” view that terrorists are unlikely to attack these health care services, particularly given evidence from attacks on other public buildings and services such as schools and transport systems.

Maternal love protects against ill effects of strict discipline

The use of harsh discipline of unwanted behaviour in children has long been controversial. Whether verbal (insults, disparaging remarks, threats) or physical (slapping/spanking), harsh discipline at all stages of childhood carries a large risk of manifesting antisocial 'externalising behaviours' in the child, including aggression, delinquency or hyperactivity.

But a new study published in the journal Parenting: Science and Practice suggests that these painful effects of harsh discipline can be moderated by the child’s feelings of being loved by their mother.
