Instructions for Authors

Articles:
We particularly invite research articles that present and discuss original research with or about visitors that contribute to knowledge and understanding in the field. Research articles should normally be of 4000 to 8000 words in length and should contain the following sections (as well as Abstract and Keywords as described below):

Introduction. Introduce the research problem, summarise and discuss related research reported in the literature, and indicate the aims and significance of the research.

Method. Provide a detailed description of the research design, participants, research settings, instruments, sampling and data collection procedures, and data analysis techniques.

Results. Report the data that answer the research questions, citing relevant statistics or qualitative data. Include tables and graphs if relevant.

Discussion. Evaluate and interpret the results with reference to the literature. Indicate the practical or theoretical implications of the results and discuss any limitations of the research. (Results and Discussion sections may be combined where appropriate.)

Conclusion. Summarize the main findings and the implications of the research for the field, with a particular focus on practical applications.

We also welcome methodology reviews which explore and critically examine the use of specific methodologies in visitor research, literature reviews which synthesise and critically discuss previous theory and research relating to a specific topic or issue, reflections on the field which provide informed insights into the past, current, and future directions of visitor studies, and site-specific evaluation studies which demonstrate the application of visitor studies in new or unusual contexts.

Format of Initial Submissions:
All manuscripts must follow APA style guidelines (see the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, latest edition). Articles should be submitted electronically as a MS Word document. Each article should be summarized in an Abstract of approximately 150 words. Include a list of up to six Keywords to be used for database word searches. In the initial submission, Tables and Figures should be included within the manuscript and all author-identifying information removed. After an initial screening, all papers will be subjected to a double-blind refereeing process. The Editor will determine acceptance after reviewing reports provided by the referees. Authors will be provided with copies of the reviews. If the article is accepted, authors will be provided with suggestions for revision. In many cases, a revision will be requested before acceptance.

Format of Revised Submissions:
If accepted for publication, a revised paper should be submitted that includes acknowledgements and a brief statement about the authors. Tables and figures should be removed from the text and included as separate pages or files. The desired position for each table and figure should be indicated in the text as "Insert Table 1 here" or "Insert Figure 3 here." A short descriptive title should appear above each table. Explanatory material should be placed as a footnote to the table. Illustrations, including black and white photographs, should be submitted as separate digital files and should follow these guidelines: 300 dpi or higher; sized to fit on journal page; EPS, TIFF, or PSD format only.

References:
References should be listed in alphabetical order and formatted using APA Style. Each listed reference should be cited in the text using the "author-date" method, and each text citation should be listed in the References.

Manuscript Submission Address:
Papers may be submitted at any time by email to Dr. Steven Guberman at sguberman@smm.org.

References:
References should be listed in alphabetical order and formatted using APA Style. Each listed reference should be cited in the text using the "author-date" method, and each text citation should be listed in the References. For further guidance, the editors recommend the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, latest edition.

Copyright:
Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyrighted material from other sources. It is a condition of publication that authors assign copyright or license the publication rights in their articles, including abstracts, to the Visitor Studies Association. This enables us to ensure full copyright protection and to disseminate the article and, of course, the Journal, to the widest possible readership in print and electronic formats as appropriate.

Author Rights:
Authors retain a number of rights, including using the pre and post print version of their article for non-commercial purposes, under the Taylor & Francis Author Rights policies documents. Details of these policies, and others, may be accessed at http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/authorrights.pdf.

Search engine optimization (SEO) is a means of making your article more visible to anyone who might be looking for it. Please consult our guidance here.
