Instructions for Authors

ScholarOne Manuscripts
This journal uses ScholarOne Manuscripts (previously Manuscript Central) to peer review manuscript submissions. Please read the guide for ScholarOne authors before making a submission. Complete guidelines for preparing and submitting your manuscript to this journal are provided below.

Submission of Manuscripts

AJOB Primary Research receives all manuscript submissions electronically via their ScholarOne Manuscripts website located at: http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/primaryresearch.  ScholarOne Manuscripts allows for rapid submission of original and revised manuscripts, as well as facilitating the review process and internal communication between authors, editors and reviewers via a web-based platform. For ScholarOne Manuscripts technical support, you may contact them by e-mail or phone support via http://scholarone.com/services/support/.  If you have any other requests please contact the journal at primaryresearch@bioethics.net.  The ScholarOne Manuscripts sites for all The American Journal of Bioethics publications can be accessed at the following link:  http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/AJOB

References

Cite references in the text by author and date (Smith 1983). A corresponding list of works cited should also appear at the end of the article. Please abbreviate the first name and spell out the last name for authors. Use headline capitalization for titles of journals and sentence capitalization for titles of books, journal articles, and chapters. Please do not abbreviate the names of journals. Some examples of common citation formats, as well as more specific guidelines, are provided online at http://editorial.bioethics.net.

Notes and Quotations

Avoid extracts, tables, and paragraphs in notes. Quotations of more than two lines should be set off in a separate paragraph with double indentation. Quotations of less than two lines may remain in the main body of the text, placed within double quotation marks. All extract citations must include page numbers.

Illustrations

Illustrations submitted (line drawings, halftones, photos, photomicrographs, etc.) should be clean originals or digital files. Digital files are recommended for highest quality reproduction and should follow these guidelines:

  • 300 dpi or higher
  • Sized to fit on journal page
  • EPS, TIFF, or PSD format only
  • Submitted as separate files, not embedded in text files

Color illustrations will be considered for publication; however, the author will be required to bear the full cost involved in their printing and publication. The charge for the first page with color is $900.00. The next three pages with color are $450.00 each. A custom quote will be provided for color art totaling more than 4 journal pages. Good-quality color prints should be provided in their final size. The publisher has the right to refuse publication of color prints deemed unacceptable.

Tables and Figures

Tables and figures (illustrations) should not be embedded in the text, but should be included as separate sheets or files. A short descriptive title should appear above each table with a clear legend and any footnotes suitably identified below. All units must be included. Figures should be completely labeled, taking into account necessary size reduction. Captions should be typed, double-spaced, and on a separate sheet. All original figures should be clearly marked in pencil on the reverse side with the number, author's name, and top edge indicated.

Proofs

Page proofs are sent to the designated author using Taylor & Francis' EProof system. They must be carefully checked and returned within 48 hours of receipt.

Offprints/Reprints

The corresponding author of each article will receive one complete copy of the issue in which the article appears. Offprints of an individual article may be ordered from Rightslink, our authorized reprint provider. Up to 10 additional issue copies may also be ordered. If offprints are not ordered by the required date, reprint pricing goes into effect, and issue copies may not be ordered.
